CHAIRMAN AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
FLYBE |
| |
|
|
A strong advocate of the regional airline industry Jim French began his 36 year Aviation career in 1970 with Caledonian Airways; then joining Air UK in 1980 where he held various Board roles in commercial, planning and marketing areas.
Jim first joined Flybe in 1990 when the airline was named Jersey European Airways, being appointed Commercial Director shortly after and subsequently becoming Deputy Chief Executive.
In June 2001 Jim was appointed as Managing Director of the airline and formulated the plan, which transformed the airline from a loss making traditional legacy carrier into one of Europe’s largest, fastest growing and dynamic airlines, creating a brand new breed of regional, low fare carrier. Jim was appointed to the combined role of Chairman and Chief Executive Officer in March 2005.
Jim’s long career in Aviation has seen him win accolades in recognition of his pivotal role as the driving force behind the success story that is Flybe today. He is respectfully acknowledged by his peers, being voted Airline Executive of the Year twice in both 2002 and 2004 by regional Airline World. Also in 2004 he was made a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society for his contribution to aviation and awarded ‘Hero in Business’ in Exeter for dedication shown to the local community.
Most recently, Jim was awarded the Regional Leadership Award in the 2008 Global Strategy Awards given in recognition of ‘demonstrated excellence in leading a regional carrier’. The category targets global airlines with clear geographic boundaries and judging criterion includes the success achieved with high operational integrity as well as the ability to produce good growth rates and keep a tight grip on costs. In 2007, Jim and his team were named the Best Management Team in the Air Transport category at the annual global Flight Awards, organised by Flight Magazine. The accolade, presented at the Paris Air Show, was ‘in recognition of its extraordinary achievement in executing the acquisition of the BA Connect operation in a remarkable timescale and an extraordinarily smooth manner’.
